Merge duplicate people

Duplicates happen: an import, a relative adding someone already there, a second spelling. A reviewed merge keeps everything both records held and writes down why they were the same person.

  1. Step 1. From the person you want to keep, open the merge page. Who is the same person? suggests candidates with matching names and compatible dates; spelling variants are not suggested, so you can also search for one.

  1. Step 1. Read both records. Facts that agree merge silently; for each fact that differs, choose which value to Use.

  2. Step 2. Say Why are these the same person in a sentence. The reason is kept with the merge.

  3. Step 3. Tick I have compared both records, then choose Merge … into …. The button stays disabled until every conflict is decided.

The kept person now holds both records’ relationships, memories, records, evidence and history. The merge itself is recorded in Activity with its receipt, and exports and restorations carry that provenance. If the two people were not the same after all, the receipt shows exactly what was combined.
