Write the question
Watch: entering a relative's email, writing a question about Eleanor, choosing the audience and creating the request · 18s
Silent demonstration. Follow the written steps on this page at your own pace.
Step 1. Open Add → Ask for a memory, or Archive → Requests and start a new request.

Step 2. Enter Their email address. Only someone signed in with that verified address can read the question.
Step 3. Write Your question. Narrow is better: a favourite meal, a first job, the people in one photograph. Need a starting question? offers prompts.
Step 4. Say Who is this about? so the relative sees the person’s name, or start the request from a photograph or a life event to give them the picture or the moment itself. Include only the context you want to share.

Step 5. Choose the Intended publication audience (family members, editors and owners, or owners only) and the Time to answer. Both are part of the request the relative sees.
Step 6. Choose Create private request. You get a link to share yourself, and the request appears under Requests.

What the relative sees
The link opens a single page: the question, the person, photograph or event it is about, who will review the answer and who can see it afterwards. They sign in with the verified email you chose, answer in writing (or by voice where that option is enabled), confirm the audience and send. Nothing else in the archive is visible to them. Answering a memory request walks through their side.

Review and publish the answer
Step 1. Home lists replies awaiting review; Archive → Requests lists every request with its status.

Step 2. Open the request to read or listen to the answer beside the original question and its context.
Step 3. Choose Publish memory to add it to the archive as a memory attributed to the relative, linked to the person, photograph or event it was about. The chosen audience applies; living-person protections may narrow it further.
Step 4. Not ready? Leave it pending, ask a follow-up, or revoke access. An answer stays outside the archive until you publish it.
Reminders and digests
A request can carry one reminder email before it expires; you choose it when you create or revisit the request, and the relative can decline it. Separately, each member can turn on a weekly or monthly digest for themselves under Settings → Your delivery preferences: counts of new material and answers awaiting review, never memory text. Digests start off.
