Add a record with its source details

A record documents a fact: a birth, a marriage, a census night, a passenger list. It is kept apart from memories so that what a document says never blurs into what someone remembers.

Record or memory?

Record
A documentary source or citation used as evidence: certificates, registers, censuses, passenger lists, wills.
Memory
Personal, expressive or family-authored material: photographs, voices, letters, recipes, stories.
File
An attachment belonging to either. A PDF is not automatically a record; a photograph is not automatically a memory.

The memories and evidence guide walks through a worked example of a memory and a record that disagree.
